Indian PM not to attend SAARC summit

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will not attend a leaders' summit of seven South Asian nations next week, Indian news agency said on Wednesday.

The agency said the situation in neighbouring Nepal, where King Gyanendra on Tuesday sacked the government and seized power, was one factor in the decision. India strongly criticised the move. The formal announcement of the decision would be announced by Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran later today.

Singh held a cabinet meeting on Wednesday which discussed the dismissal of the
Nepalese government and the imposition of a state of emergency.

SAARC groups Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The summit is set for February 6-7.
